My name is Kevin Brookes, I’m 64 years old and was born and raised in Thurcroft, a small village in South Yorkshire. My father was a coal miner and my mother worked in the steel works in Sheffield. I am the second eldest of three brothers and have a younger sister. I have been married to Anne for 38 years and have two grown-up sons.
I left school at 15 years old and joined the Army as a boy soldier and trained as an Army Bandsman. I attended the Royal Military School of Music at Kneller Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire in Cyrus in October 1971.
Postings to Northern Ireland, Dover and West Germany and Bulford then followed. In 1979 I transferred to the Royal Military Police and again serviced in Germany, Hong Kong and Catterick before leaving after 16 years in 1982.
I later joined the Prison Service and worked at Ashford Remand Centre, Feltham YOI and finally at Portland YOI. My Prison Service career came to a very abrupt end when I was attacked on duty on 2001 in Portland and I was badly injured in that incident. I left the Prison Service in 2003 after 18 years’ service.
My political career started in 1988 when I became a school governor. I was co-opted onto the Education Committee in Hillingdon in 1989 and was elected as Councillor or the West Drayton Ward on Hillingdon Borough Council in 1980. I served on the Education, Housing, Planning an Social Services Committees. I was also on the Board of Governors at Uxbridge College.
We moved to Weymouth in 1998. I was elected in 2000 for the Preston ward, 2004 for Wey Valley ward and Upwey and Broadwey ward in 2014.
